Rubik's Cube solution: layer by layer method

Last update: 2007, 20 January

Second layer (middle)

We place the three edges in the middle layer, leaving the one under the working corner. We will use for each corner this procedure:

  • we identify the edge we want to place: we have to understand where it is e where we have to position it;
  • we move this edge in the third layer if it is in the second: to do that we use the working corner to mantain what we have just done. We twist the up layer letting the working corner be on the edge to move and we apply the F' D' F formula;
  • we turn the down layer as the next pictures, letting the edge to place have the opposite color of the face where it is;
  • new that it is in the third layer we have to place it in the final position: we place the working corner on the coloumn of the final position and apply the corresponding formula F D' F' or R' D R.

In next example we show how to place three edges.

We can place now the corner cubelet in the first layer using the formula we saw in the second step of the first layer.

New an example of placing the fourth edge of the first layer:

Now the Cube should appear as in next picture:

We complete the middle layer twisting the Rubik's Cube upside down and positioning the fourth edge to position watching at the orientation. Now we can execute the formula corresponding at the fact that it is on the left or on the rigth.

We can now see how the middle layer of the Rubik's Cube has to be completed:

Now we have two layers completed.
